COMIC BOOK MOSAICS - They're back!

This is a game I used to routinely post in one of the forum's previous incarnations.
Feeling nostalgic, I decided to revisit it.

Here's how it works. I'll post images of heavily pixelated comic book covers. Your job is to identify the covers. Each cover has a starting value of 10 points (i.e. round one). I'll periodically update the covers with increasingly clearer renditions (i.e. round two, three, four...). As rounds progress, the image becomes more discernible, but as a picture's clarity increases, the value for identifying that individual cover decreases. If you identify a cover in round two, award yourself 8 points, round three 6 points etc.. (see example).

There's also an overlying theme/commonality to the covers that's worth an additional 5 points if you figure out what it is. Don't post your answers. If think you've identified a cover(s) and/or what the covers have in common, PM your answers to me. This way players may still participate for the duration of the game without having the solution spoiled.I may not get back to your right away, but I will check my messages prior to posting the next round's clearer images. If you answer correctly, I'll acknowledge your score along with the update. You get one guess per cover per round.

UPDATE:
GAME OVER - HOUSE WINS. You've been flummoxed.

REVEAL (You may still attempt to solve the puzzles, but zero points will be awarded. Should you wish to see the answers, I've now hotlinked each puzzle to its respective solution. I've also added a link to the theme's reveal.)

If this was a Hollywood movie I would just click "enhance" in some computer program and they would both come into focus.

I did real well with these in the past by taking off my glasses and using my awful eyesight. Nothing this time yet.

Admittedly, these aren't exactly what I'd classify as iconic covers, so in that respect they're probably a bit more challenging. But there's more to this game than merely identifying comic covers. Perhaps a shift in focus (and I'm not talking about your gaze) would be beneficial.

    Got it.

The initial post has been updated. I received several PMs (and @Peter : I did see your post before it was deleted -thanks for doing that). After one round, there is no score.

The initial post has been updated. Round three starts now.

Once again the initial post has been updated. Can you score in round four?

I'd like to buy a vowel.

Vowels on Wheel of Fortune cost players $250. Tell ya what... I'll give you the special CGS rate - a mere $125 per vowel. Mind you, I'm cuttin' me own throat here.

On Thursday, I'll be flying to L.A. for the annual Gallifrey One con, so I'm going to try to wrap this is up beforehand. I intend to post the final round tonight before I go to bed (I'm on the West Coast, so PST). Assuming I remember to do so, I'll reveal the covers' identities and the theme sometime on Wednesday.

The initial post has been updated (yet again).
This is the fifth and final round and your last opportunity to submit answers.
Hint: Sometimes one needs to tackle a problem from a different angle. Try deducing the theme sight unseen, and the rest will come into focus.

    Game over. Nobody got 'em.
I may be back next month with a new challenge.

The images in the initial post have been updated. I've left them scrambled for the benefit of those of you who wish to keep trying. However, the images are now hotlinked to their respective solutions. Clicking/tapping on them should open up the reveal in a new tab or window. Please don't PM me anymore for this iteration of the contest, for points are no longer being awarded. Thanks for playing. There were some very plausible guesses, but in the end you were all flummoxed.

Yeah, one cover I've only seen at thumbnail size, the other I don't think I've ever seen.

I initially was thinking some of the Matt Wagner covers that he did for DC - particularly the three he did that connected featuring Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman, but they didn't line up with the coloring of the pixelations. This was a beast!

The second cover I was thinking Captain America, and even looked through a bunch of Cap covers. I wasn’t too far off, but I've never seen that cover before. The title doesn’t even register with me—probably something I quickly passed over in a crowded Previews catalog.
  • I don't think that 2nd one is a real comic. Looks like it's a piece of fan art that somebody made for a buddy of theirs. This is the only hit I get for it:

I think you might be right. It's not listed in either the Grand Comic Book Database or Comic Book DB, and judging from the artist’s comments, it wasn’t done for print publication.
  • PS - I did think the "theme" for the post was very clever though!
  • The second cover I was thinking Captain America

    I went with this.

I'd never seen either cover before. Makes me wish I hadn't spent all that time squinting...

D'OH! I'm sincerely sorry about that. Posting a mock cover was never my intent. I picked the theme, then performed Google image searches for Eagles and Patriots comics. Apparently, the "cover" I picked wasn't actually a cover. Next time, I'll be mindful to check that whatever covers I select were ones used on... you know... like actual comic books. Also, expect better representation by the big two the next time I do this (probably in March).

I look forward to the next challenge. And as far as I'm concerned, please don’t feel like you have to go all in on the Big Two, just don’t go too esoteric on us. :)
